We are beyond excited to host our first annual Cleft Camp at Kona Kona Resort in Northern Minnesota. This is a time for families and adults affected by cleft and facial differences to make fun memories and create lasting, healing connections. From time in the hammock and lake fun to campfire conversations- we know this experience will leave a lasting impact.
Camp will be held June 7-14th 2024 at Kona Kona Resort- just 3 hours north of Minneapolis. We anticipate a mix of attendees- kids with a parent, families, and adults. Some may come for a weekend, while others may stay a week. They will be staying in cabins and have access to all of our lake toys!
We already have some amazing campers registered! How can you help? We are looking for donations to help support travel, lodging and FUN for all!

Cleft Camp will be hosted by the owners of Kona Kona- Anna and Roy and Jenna (Anna’s sister) and Mattie.
Empowering kids and adults with cleft and facial differences- and their families- is near and dear to our hearts. Anna (me- also known as Dr. Anna Thurmes) was born with a cleft lip and palate. After many surgeries, speech therapy and braces- I grew up to become a leader of a Cleft and Craniofacial Team at the University of Minnesota- where I continue to work with families. I am both a speech-language therapist and hold a PhD in family social science. One of my passions in life is empowering children and adults who are navigating the challenges associated with facial differences.
Whether the person with the facial difference, the parent, the sibling- it is a journey. It is a journey that takes courage and perseverance to endure. It can also be a blessing in disguise!!!
Cleft Camp at Kona Kona is all about helping families experience the blessing in disguise- to find healing through fun and connections.
Reflecting back on my journey, as well as the journey of the thousands of families I have worked with over the past decades, an experience like Cleft Camp at Kona Kona can be LIFE CHANGING! I am sure my parents and sisters would say the same thing! The opportunity to connect with other parents, other kids, and adults- is healing and empowering.
The beautiful thing- when we we help individuals and families on their journey- they in turn are equipped to make their own, unique positive impact in this world.
